MSU Bulldogs

The Mississippi State Bulldogs are the athletic teams of Mississippi State University. They participate in NCAA's Division I in the competitive 12-member Southeastern Conference under the mascot Bulldogs and the school colors of maroon and white. Over all sports, MSU has earned 28 SEC Championships.

In Football, the school has produced 14 All-Americans and 54 All-SEC members. In 1998, MSU won the SEC Western Division Championship.  In 1999 MSU finished 10-2 with a #12 final ranking. That is the best record and highest final ranking of any Division I-Bowl team in Mississippi in the past 30 years and the highest Poll ranking in Mississippi Division I in over 40 years.  Mississippi State made history on December 1, 2003, when it hired Sylvester Croom as its head football coach. Croom was the first African-American named to such a position in the history of the SEC.

In basketball, MSU earned six SEC Championships and two SEC Tournament Championships.  The Bulldogs played in the NCAA Basketball Tournament eight times since 1963 and in the National Invitational Tournament five times since 1974.  In 1995, MSU made the "Sweet Sixteen" in the NCAA tournament, and in 1996, MSU won the Southeastern NCAA Regional Championship ("Elite Eight" game) and played in the "Final Four."  In 1963, the team made history by defying an order from the Governor of Mississippi to not play in the NCAA tournament, because the team they faced, Loyola University of Chicago, had African-Americans on its squad This was one of the first times that an all-white school faced a team with blacks as its members, and is considered to be a watershed moment in the Civil Rights era.  The 1995-96 team reached a pinnacle in MSU's basketball history, winning a second-straight SEC Western Division title, claiming a first-ever SEC Tournament Championship over top-ranked and eventual national champion Kentucky, and gaining a berth in the NCAA's national championship Final Four.

In baseball, MSU earned nine SEC Championships since 1948 and five SEC Tournament Championships since 1979.  State has also earned appearances to 29 NCAA Baseball Regionals and made it to the College World Series 8 times. One of the greatest Bulldog success stories since 1990 has been a tennis program firmly established among the nation's elite. The program has finished in the final top 25 rankings 12 times in that stretch (1990-2001) and in the top 10 seven times in that span.
