Boston College Eagles
Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston's Irish immigrants. Today, with an enrollment of 14,500 undergraduate and graduate students, Boston College has grown to become one of the largest Catholic universities in the nation, serving the sons and daughters of 50 states and 85 countries. Today, the Boston College motto "ever to excel" also extends beyond a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts.
Athletics is also integral to the University's focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. The Boston College athletic program shares the University's commitment to the development of the whole person—body as well as mind and spirit. Boston College offers 12 men's and 15 women's varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level. The University ranks sixth in the nation in terms of Division 1 student-athlete graduation rates; its football Eagles have one of the highest graduation rates of any Division 1-A program in the country. One of their many noteworthy athletic accomplishments is Doug Flutie, the most productive offensive player in football history and recipient of the 1984 Heisman Trophy.
