Virginia Cavaliers

The Virginia Cavaliers are the athletics teams of the University of Virginia. The athletics program has won 19 recognized national championships, tied for the second-highest total of national titles in the expanded 12-program Atlantic Coast Conference. The Virginia Cavaliers' first team--a helmetless band of young men in tight shirts, laced-up pants and high-top cleats--opened its season on a gravel-strewn field, the historic contest witnessed by a sparse gathering of fans and no press coverage. That 1888 squad of 11 men and one substitute played three games, winning two and losing one, on a five-acre tract.  The current history of the Virginia Cavaliers boasts several All Americans and NFL players.  You’ve come a long way baby!   

The media generally refers to the University's athletic teams as simply Virginia for short, and the mascot is a mounted swordsman, or "Cavalier". Virginia's athletic teams have participated in the Atlantic Coast Conference since the league's first year in 1953. Its men's basketball team has five times been part of the NCAA Elite Eight, twice advancing to the Final Four.  The Virginia Cavaliers football team has twice been honored as ACC Co-Champions
